"Is that it?!", seems to just about sum up
many people's response to this wonder of the world, (UNESCO Heritage
Site), the dry rock garden (karesansui). To be honest,
travelling all that way just to sit and look at some raked gravel is
a bit of a let down, but after a while it does sort of grow on you.
In typical Zen style it is supposed to symbolise something, but
nobody is quite sure what; apparently not anything which can be seen
in the real world, otherwise why would you want to symbolise it.
Hmmm! I suspect it is not helped by the overcrowding and
noise of the tourist mob; perhaps in silence the Zen bit might be
more apparent. I also suspect I am not one of those ever
destined to achieve "enlightenment".
Fortunately there are also some rather beautiful "wet" gardens, not
to mention a delightful restaurant with a view over them.
Perfect for a late lunch having viewed both Kinkaku-ji and Ryoanji
in the morning. |
