Nijo Castle (Nijo-jo) lies in the centre of Kyoto, containing two palaces within the outer moats.  Perhaps most noted for the "Nightingale Floor" which essentially comprises some squeaky floorboards to warn of the approach of otherwise silent assassins; I have the same arrangement in my own home, though provided without additional charge by my dodgy joiner

Rather beautiful interiors though sadly photography is, uncharacteristically for Japan, prohibited.

The amazing gardens are designed, amongst other things, to provide a continuous display of blossoms throughout the year; they helpfully provide a table showing which trees, shrubs or flowers will be in bloom each month, though it has to be said that the early April cherry blossoms form the highlight of the year including the nightime illuminations.
