Chushojima, just a short suburban train journey to the south of Kyoto, is a welcome break from the tourist mayhem of the city.  It is also quite different aesthetically with dozens of little shops in the old town, plus traditional sake breweries along the river and canal sides, all in a distinctive architectural  style.

It was a proper little town (or at least suburb) where people wandered around quietly and all seemed to be smiling...no connection to the alcohol vapours then?
