The Kyoto Imperial Palace is absolutely huge!  If you follow the guide book instructions and take the tube to the nearest station (imadegawa) it will still take you a 20 minute walk to the entrance.  Like the Katsura Rikyu, normally you have to book in advance (though bizarrely only 20 minutes), I guess so they can check your passport; obviously you need to apply in person.  We made the mistake of visiting on one of the public open days which meant hordes of tourists and a continuous crocodile of visitors around the buildings.  No refreshments available and no drinking or eating except in the tents provided specially for the purpose (if you had remembered to bring your own).  Normally that would not be a problem, but it was very hot and took a couple of hours to walk around.  Still, very beautiful and photogenic.
