The
fact that the infamous Lonely Planet recommendations for
Thimpu in 24 hours suggest highlights such as a visit to the weekend
market and then Benez Bar, should give you some idea of how little
there is to see and do in the area. A very mediocre Folk
Museum, a pathetic zoo, a National Memorial distinguished only by
being the sole such memorial I have yet come across which is totally
unmemorable so, unless your thing is temples in an extreme though
un-picturesque state of disrepair or you entertain a penchant for
stinking sewers or perhaps an insatiable desire to purchase some
genuine Bhutanese plastic flip-flops or harbour an as yet
unfulfilled fantasy of being savaged by a pack of marauding rabid
dogs... Like most capital cities it
is hardly fair to judge the entire country on the basis of the tatty
shanty town, but unless you plan your visit to coincide with the
tsechu, which may well be worth braving the hideous hordes for, then
given a limited time budget I would probably not give it more than a
maximum of 24 hours...and I would certainly not follow LP
recommendations. |
