Given that one of the key reasons for visiting Bhutan is the
traditional architecture, the Folk Museum is, to put it mildly, a
disappointment. In fact, by any standards it is probably the
most unimpressive Folk Museum (of traditional buildings) I have ever
come across...anywhere in the world. Comprising little more
than a single traditional farmhouse, admittedly complete with
traditional mill, weaving looms etc., plus a rather groovy water
mill as used nowadays for the less prosaic, but utterly pointless
renewable energy powered prayer wheels.
But here again given that the entire country
is virtually one great traditional building museum, it hardly seems
to matter, just so long as they not only maintain the law about new
buildings, but also make sure that nobody starts knocking down
traditional buildings to replace or improve them with "modern"
alternatives. |
