Wangdue Phodrang
lies right on the border between Western and Central Bhutan.
It is rather mountainous with the consequent inevitable tortuous
roads, but well worth the effort even if you have only a few days in
the country.
It is home to two of my top tips for the
country, Wangdue Dzong, notable both for its impressive position
high above the river as well as its attractive interior, and Gangtey
Goemba, a picturesquely located monastery in the tranquil Phobjika
Valley. In fact, many are drawn to this valley purely for its
natural beauty and, if your interest is birdlife, then you might
catch the migrating black-necked cranes as they pass through,
although sadly it is not possible to catch both the cranes and the
Gangtey festival at the same time. |
