Whilst the weekend market offers a perfectly adequate selection of
fresh produce on one side of the river and prodigious quantities of
tourist tat on the other, it hardly rates mention as a tourist
attraction. What surprised me most about it was that it
clearly showed that it was possible to obtain a wide range of decent
vegetables, spices, rice and so on, so why on earth are their
offerings in every restaurant so utterly awful? Clearly it is
possible to obtain more than chillies and cheese and at reasonable
prices, so what is their problem? The
other striking feature was their complete and utter lack of
enthusiasm to sell anything to anyone. Everywhere else I have
been, particularly in the third world, market vendors tend to be
enthusiastic to the point of aggression, but here they seemed
uninterested even when you ask to buy their wares.
Maybe a lethargy born of the copious local
supplies of...recreational substances? |
