No
matter how often I visit Tokyo, I never seem to get round to seeing
Shinjuku properly. Admittedly there is rather a lot to see,
and a great deal more than the night life. It is not all just
party, party, party, although I am reliably informed that East
Shinjuku is home to Tokyo's red light district (Kabukicho) and arty
bars (Golden Gai). For cinema aficionados, this is where
Lost in Translation was filmed and, whilst I am not a great fan
of Hollywood, that movie does seem to capture something of what it
feels like. In the daytime, in
addition to the impressive, though not necessarily particularly
attractive architecture, there is an amazing park (well worth
visiting in cherry blossom season), shops...you know, the usual and
a trip up the once tallest building in Tokyo, the Metropolitan
Government Building is a must, not only to get a great view of Tokyo
right out to Mount Fuji on a good day, but because it is free! |
