According to Wikipedia, the palace grounds were, during the 1980's property bubble, valued at more than the entire State of California...and given the money I would have gone for the palace.  It is so superbly understated and dignified, within a stone's throw of Tokyo Central Station which conveys over 140 million passengers annually, and yet a haven of tranquillity.

Unfortunately there is not much left of the original buildings...we have our American cousins to thank for that
