Sapporo is regarded with
some disdain by the remainder of the Japanese as is Hokkaido in
general. Leaving aside the issue of the aboriginals who fare even
worse in the ethnic hierarchy, the population of this Northern island are
considered,
well, a bit brash. But who cares; it is definitely not to be missed. The architecture,
unconstrained by either Western conservativism nor Japanese restraint,
allows Western architects to indulge their wildest fantasies. The
Kita Club is one of the most bizarre experiences, particularly as one
tends to be fairly well under the influence there most of the
time. If you want to stay
right in the middle of it all, the Jasmac Plaza hotel is definitely the one,
with a fantastic onsen (natural spa) as well as numerous
restaurants of it's own if you tire of Susukino's temptations. Susukino with its 4000 nightclubs
should keep you busy. Apparent office blocks on closer inspection
turn out to be multi-storey night clubs.
