Due to its relative proximity to
Tokyo, Nikko is, not surprisingly, a rather popular weekend tourist
destination. At least that is what the guide books tell you.
What they actually mean is that, not only is Nikko within a couple
of hours of Tokyo by train, it is also one of Japan's more
significant religious sites and therefore utterly heaving with
tourists from dawn to dusk at weekends.
Despite this it is still worth the effort of
fighting through the hideous hordes to visit the "important" bits
and if you have enough energy left, you can wander down the Gamman
Ga Fuchi, a ravine with trees dangling their branches over the
torrent below, traversed by the famous Shin Kyo bridge which (again
according to the guide books) only nobility were allowed to cross,
but far more interestingly is populated by thousands of cute little
Buddha statues, many of which sport even cuter knitted woollen bibs
and bobble hats...who says the Japanese have no sense of humour? |
