Bizarrely, considering the name
means "black land", the town council decided to let some obtuse artist
initiate a project to paint the town blue starting in 1998, only a year
after it was founded! With a population less than 10,000 you
hardly expect a brilliant nightlife; in fact it is one of the deadest
places I have ever visited, but with a quite dazzling location you tend
not to mind. I first passed through in the afternoon and, perhaps
naively, assumed the only restaurant in town would offer a welcome
dinner, only to find it closed on my return at 18:00! Even more
frustrating considering the sun was shining as it would all night, and
it just felt absurdly early to go to bed with no supper!
The sculpture is OK, but with a contextual
opportunity like this is would have been hard to get it wrong. So
rather disappointing and, unlike my preferred sculptures in this
project, they chose to place it right in the centre of town, making it
accessible to more people, but less a part of the staggeringly beautiful
landscape and as the project is "art in the landscape"...
