Andøya is the most
Northern of the main islands in Lofoten; translated it means "Duck Island"
and, from the amount of birdlife you can tell why. About half way up
there is the beautifully located octagonal church at Dverberg.
Apparently they only installed heating in 1900, prior to which Sunday
services could be cancelled as, even for Norwegians, it can get get a bit
chilly in winter. This belies the old Norwegian adage that there is no
such thing as severe weather...just the wrong kind of clothing!
Andenes, the point at which the road ends, is still a
fishing town and home to Norway's rocket firing range as well as the rip-off
whale viewing tours; be prepared to pay around £80 per person for a four
hour trip with, depending on the time of year, possibly hundreds of other
hopefuls!
You can find plenty of places to stay, although
they seem rather unfriendly towards the hordes of German camper vans.
They even have a bar, with rather odd licensing rules where the type of
alcohol you can drink is determined by the time of day, as well as your age.
Must become rather confusing the more you drink! There is even a night
club called...yes you guessed: Disco Duck! |
