It is arguable that virtually every
tourist visiting Pisa is there primarily to see and be photographed near
the Leaning Tower. That is a shame, because there is a lot more to
enjoy than that. Not on the same scale as Florence, but there are
many interesting buildings, museums and, of equal importance to me, a
few decent restaurants. Pisa is also a
university city, so expect a few token, radical graffiti.
It is also a relatively quiet city apart from
the inevitable chaos of the Piazza dei Miracoli wherein lie the tower,
the baptistery and the cathedral. This piazza is a wonderful place
to just sit and admire the view, although it has to said that getting a
seat at a table in any of the bars or restaurants with anything
approaching a decent view is somewhat challenging; I do not think I have
ever encountered the level of aggressive rudeness of tourists and staff
alike as I found here. However, I was fortunate to stay in a hotel
with a rooftop terrace with a perfect view of the piazza, and found a
couple of really excellent restaurants (without views) thanks to
the advice of my most trustworthy Michelin Red Guide.
