According to most of the guide books, the most important sight in
Fiesole is the Roman theatre, but it is also home to Etruscan remains,
various churches, villas...the usual stuff.
Also
the most affluent suburb of Florence and where people go to escape the
summer heat and, in some cases, the plague. For it was here that
Boccaccio set his Decameron, tales related by the Florentine refugees
who chose to spend their isolation here. Appropriate then that I
should spend the week in which COVID-19 struck Italy to attend a
conference here.
But
my fondest memories are of previous summer visits where I could enjoy a
wonderful meal on a terrace overlooking the city. For if there is
one thing for which I will remember Fiesole, it is the stupendous views
of the valley and city below. |
