Leon, former capital of the Kingdom of Leon, and a key
stage of the Camino de Santiago, not surprisingly contains some quite
magnificent architecture including the Romanesque basilica of San Isidoro,
Gothic cathedral, Renaissance San Marcos and into the twentieth century with
Gaudi's Casa de Botines. The Monastery of San
Marcos, now a Parador, is distinctly unwelcoming to non-residents, but then
they are probably fed up with pilgrims and other hopeful tourists just
coming in for a gawp!
Plenty of reasonably priced hotels in the centre of
town; the Plaza Mayor seems rather quiet in comparison with the area
surrounding the cathedral. Good, unpretentious restaurants with solid
Castilian food, as well as more exotic restaurants, tapas bars...the usual
choices.
