Cacabelos, about four hours walk from Ponferrada
(16km), is a rather pleasant little town. On the outskirts I came
across a cute old hotel and, feeling rather virtuous that I had got that
far by 10:30 in the morning, was sorely tempted to call it a day.
There were plenty of interesting buildings and a rather quaint Plaza, but
I decided to be even more virtuous and crack on to Villafranca. It
was only another 8km, or so the map showed. It quickly became
apparent that this was the wishful thinking of a deranged Spanish map
maker and it took another three hours to do the last bit. Now it is
said that the last 2km of the day always seem the longest, regardless of
how many you have already walked; I have yet to scientifically analyse
this thesis, but it certainly feels that way! |
