I almost did not bother with this
destination along the Camino as I was trying to limit the number of stop-overs
in order to reach Santiago in time. What a mistake that would have
been; the approach to the town from the desolate railway station was
not a good start, but once I reached the old town it was quietly
welcoming and full of interesting buildings including an externally almost
identical copy of Leon cathedral and another Gaudi building, the Bishop's
Palace. Set on the top of a hill with intact city walls and
magnificent views over the Meseta, shady walks and a park with distinctly
upmarket graffiti. Plenty of decent hotels
and restaurants and everything within easy walking distance.
