If you only have
limited time in Venice, then this is the district to head for.
Take a vaporetto from the Santa Lucia Station (which is where you
will probably arrive) along the Grand Canal, catching glimpses of
palaces and the famous Rialto bridge along the way, without moving
from a shady mobile seat direct to the waterfront of Piazza San
Marco. From the Piazza San Marco you
get quite wonderful views, no less beautiful for being the most
photographed vistas in the civilised world, of San Giorgio across
the lagoon, Santa Maria della Salute across the Grand Canal and, if
you turn around for a second, the Doge's Palace, the Basilica San
Marco...
But, beyond these world famous landmarks,
you only have to wander beyond the Piazza to find enchanting back
streets, canals, great little restaurants, seemingly endless
churches, quaint squares (campos not piazzas)...perfect for getting
lost in! |
