Given that I had very limited time and there was a two mile queue, a
€20 entrance fee and photography is not permitted inside, I decided
to give it a miss on this visit and provide myself with yet another
excuse to go back another time... A
masterpiece of Venetian Gothic which, whilst it got Ruskin all
excited, is a bit heavy handed for my taste. I suspect that
just about any building sited in this location would brush up pretty
nicely...not to appear a Philistine, but I just find the endless
repetition of arches a trifle unimaginative.
The Bridge of Sighs on the other hand,
despite attracting thousands of tourists simultaneously clamouring
to get their photos taken with it as a backdrop, still manages to
appear enigmatic and, given its history, more than a little
sinister, truly Gothick. |
