La
Giudecca comes as something of a relief after the intensity of the
hot spots around San Marco, Rialto, Academia and so on.
Perhaps because it is physically separated from the other islands
and you have to take the boat, but probably because it has fewer
"must see" tourist honey pots, just one of the world's most
significant bits of Renaissance architecture, Il Redentore, and a
few more half decent bits for good measure. Bizarrely home to
one of the world's most expensive hotels, the Cipriani, and one of
Venice's cheapest, the youth hostel at €2,000 and €20 a night
respectively...but the youth hostel has nicer views!
The church
of Il Redentore, (the Redeemer) was built as a thanksgiving to
mark the end of yet another Venetian plague, but was only accepted
by the friars of the local monastery on the condition that no nobles
or otherwise rich people could be buried there lest it become
wealthy from donations. A pity that no-one told those who now
run the place and charge an entrance fee, and prohibit photography,
albeit with little enthusiasm and even less effect, whilst the
nearby San Giorgio is both free and allows photography.
Despite this minor annoyance, I have given
Il
Redentore a page of its own,
here. |
