Portomarín, or at least the original
Portomarín, was flooded when they built the dam. They thought the
Romanesque church was important enough to save and so removed it stone by
stone and rebuilt it, and a new town, further up the hill. You can
still see the numbered stones on the church walls.
I had assumed that the resulting town would be dull
and characterless, but it was actually quite pleasant with arcaded Plaza
complete with usual restaurants and bars, a couple of half decent hotels
and an arcaded main street. For those suffering from vertigo, the
main approaches are a wee bit scary, albeit rather atmospheric in the
early morning mist.
