Portomarín, or at least the original Portomarín, was flooded when they built the dam.  They thought the Romanesque church was important enough to save and so removed it stone by stone and rebuilt it, and a new town, further up the hill.  You can still see the numbered stones on the church walls.

I had assumed that the resulting town would be dull and characterless, but it was actually quite pleasant with arcaded Plaza complete with usual restaurants and bars, a couple of half decent hotels and an arcaded main street.  For those suffering from vertigo, the main approaches are a wee bit scary, albeit rather atmospheric in the early morning mist.
