There is
something about the City of London, almost inescapably like
the opening scene from Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, so
much so that I find derision more appropriate than contempt for the
parasitic institutions which epitomise global economic exploitation.
One of the benefits of this obscene concentration of other peoples'
wealth is that, just as exploitative and highly questionable fund
raising activities funded St Peters in Rome, most of Florence and
indeed virtually every architectural wonder of the ancient world, so
this trend continues and you can find a quite staggering amount of
impressive modern architecture.
So far this has, despite concerns that the
scale of modern buildings might submerge the historic churches and
iconic St Pauls, managed to remain a vibrant environment throughout
the day, though dead as a dodo by night when everybody leaves.
A daytime population of 330,000; by night a mere 11,000!
