Chatsworth is a reminder of just how
wealthy this part of England used to be and, contrary to the current
trend for historical revisionism, that affluence predated the slave
trade by centuries. Admittedly they were instead exploiting the
local peasantry, but... Quite a
spectacular building in a wonderful setting, it is inevitably more than
a wee bit touristy. However, well worth enduring for the imposing
gardens and grounds, miracles of hydraulic engineering for their time as
well as home to many an innovation in horticulture. Also an
excellent centre for walking. |
