Although an English Heritage site, Bolsover Castle is partly roofed!  In fact some really interesting interiors including the riding school, plus far-reaching views from the windows and parapets of the old castle.  The Civil War battle which took place here is celebrated annually; it is fascinating to be right in the middle of it particularly when you realise over what an incredibly short distance they were shooting at each other.

Generally quite a lot of other activity including medieval re-enactments, period music and children's events which at least have some vague reference to historic events, even if it is only sword-fighting with plastic weapons.
