Sidi Ifni was, until 1975, a Spanish
enclave just like the remaining ones at Melilla and Ceuta in the
North. Apparently they had aspirations for a trendy seaside
resort in the 1930's and there remain a number of now decrepit art
deco buildings including one in the form of a ship, built for a
Spanish naval officer. These, together with the now derelict
Spanish Government building, stand as a rather sad testament to a
former, more affluent era. It is still an attractive location,
the old town perched on the top of cliffs with an amazing view of
the Atlantic where the sunsets are staggering.
There are one or
two rather tatty, but tolerable hotels and restaurants with decent
fresh food, but very few serving alcohol.
