Not content with a perfectly
good 12th century Romanesque cathedral, the citizenry of Salamanca
decided they really could do with another one, so added a Gothic
version between the 16th and 18th Centuries. To add to the
locational confusion of two cathedrals crashing into one another, in
typical European style (primarily to upset our American friends) the
16th century one is referred to as the New Cathedral.
If you notice an uncanny resemblance of the
New Cathedral to the one in Segovia, that is no surprise; Juan Gil
de Hontañón was the master mason for both, as well as having a hand
in Zamora Cathedral. |
