Even with our expectations of culture shock, Manakha really did seem like something out of "Black Hawk Down".  Yes, I know it is very far away, but the super-abundance of AK47's and assorted weaponry slung casually over the shoulder of teenage shoppers really did shock.  There was also something about the general air of dilapidation that lent itself to the ambience of an anarchistic battle zone.

Upsides?  Again, fabulous vernacular architecture and people dressed as though they were film extras, plus the best food we had in Yemen (not a Michelin star endorsement, but at least fresh and flavoursome) and a tolerable "hotel" with fabulous views; could be a great base for walking tours.
