Variously described as Neo-Metabolist, Post
Modern, Modern, Structuralist, Kenzo Tange's Fuji TV Building is
certainly an imposing landmark on Odaiba, dominating the waterfront
when viewed from Central Tokyo. What appear to be completely
pointless "sky corridors" are supposedly intentionally designed to
"provide areas for informal interaction and encourage communication
amongst employees". One of the most gratuitous bits of
post-rationalisation I have ever come across. I am unaware of
the corresponding rationale for the 1200 tonne spherical observation
tower which, due its position fails to even exploit its potential
360 degree view... As with many tower
blocks it suffers from being subject to the Laws of Physics, so that
the wind speeds at ground level are so high that it is almost
impossible to stand upright let alone brave the imposing central
staircase. All that plus a derivative nod to Rogers with the
plexi-glass escalator tubes. |
