Guadalupe • Las Hurdes • Monfrague • Plasencia • Talavera la Vieja • Trujillo

Extremadura, whatever its precise meaning is one of Spain's  toughest, and poorest, regions.  World renowned for its fighting bulls and conquistadors, sociopathic thugs, destroyers of ancient civilisations or redeeming crusaders depending on your politics, yet still full of charm, beauty and tranquillity.  It is home to Roman cities with astonishing amounts of impressive remains, Merida, Caceres...not yet included here.

The town of Guadalupe, from where Columbus set out on his quest for America and where he returned to pay tribute for his success, still is a place of pilgrimage and  rather quaint.  The Parador is quite perfect for a romantic break and there do not seem to be any American tourists, just Spanish pilgrims and brides...

There remain tiny villages which time seems to have passed by and towns and monuments which always remind you of their Roman, Visigoth, Conquistador heritage.
