Given the amount of hype in the guide books, I had expected Cafe
Pedrocchi to be an over-priced tourist trap, rather like the rip-off
joints on the Piazza San Marco in Venice. I was pleasantly
surprised; although not a cheap watering hole, it was not
unreasonable for a comfortable bar with classic waiter service.
On the other hand it was somewhat disappointing as a space and, of
course, no revolutionary discourse to be had...just loud Americans
ordering ice cream. Something of a
paradox that such an exclusive establishment as Cafe Pedrocchi
should be home to revolutionary foment, and riots, but then the
Italians have to do everything with a certain degree of style.
There is something about the building and
its place within the surrounding piazza and streets which feels
rather like a Paul Delvaux painting, thus rating highly on my list
of surrealist fantasy locations. All it needs is a tram and
floaty ladies in nightgowns... |
