One of Palladio's technical masterpieces, it
is difficult to see what all the fuss was about when you see it in
the flesh. Indeed you hardly notice the subtle variations in
bay size when you view the building overall. Palladio had been
tasked with putting a "modern" (classical) facade onto an existing
Gothic building with irregular bay sizes. To overcome this
challenge, Palladio kept the arches all the same size, and rather
than simply supporting the arches on solid piers of varying width,
instead used double columns separated from the piers by spaces
varied to compensate for the irregular bay widths.
