Villa Barbaro | Villa Emo | Villa Foscari | Villa Godi | Villa Piovene

Rather austere and heavy, almost clumsy from the outside, one of Palladio's earlier works and very much less sophisticated than his later villas with imposing portico facades.  Strange to think that even with the wealth to commission such magnificent villas complete with murals by masters of the time, his patrons still baulked at the cost of elaborate porticoes on occasion.

Set on a hillside with wonderful views, though overlooked by the Villa Piovene, warm summer breeze wafting through the rich interior.  The gardens are worth a casual saunter; nice shady bits...and the mandatory soft porn statues.

The kind custodian allowed me to take interior photos on the basis that no-one else was there to object...
