Uffizi

Although most people tend to visit the Uffizi to see its amazing collection of art works, it is also something of an architectural masterpiece in its own right.  It is one of the absolute "must see" destinations in Florence, if not the whole world, so expect hideous queues.  They have a limited visitor numbers thing going on so, even if you have a timed ticket, you will not be allowed in until one of the previous visitors leaves.  For this reason I (wisely as it turned out) chose to book an early slot (08:50) on the assumption that there could not be that many people clogging up the works at that hour.

Several guide books say you need four hours or at least 2-3 for a quick visit.  I reckon a couple of hours maximum, by which time you will be exhausted and ready for a cool beer on the terrace.

As with many of this city's sights it is subject to an officially condoned scam.  If you buy a ticket online on the official web site, it costs €21.  If you go to the ticket office you will pay €11 plus a €4 booking fee.  As there appears to absolutely no way you can buy a ticket anywhere else, it is beyond me why they do not simply say the ticket is €15!
