I vaguely recall the alcazar
from my first visit in the 1960's when, if my memory serves me it
was still more or less a heap of rubble. It's principal claim
to fame was that it had stood out against the nasty Reds during the
civil war despite threats to murder the fascist leader's son if they
did not surrender. Shelled into oblivion, the valiant good
guys sheltered in the basement with their families until the cavalry
rode in to the rescue...or something like that.
Now the basement is an army museum; I am (un)reliably
informed that Toledo remains something of a right wing stronghold
politically, unlike Segovia where they are rewriting "history by the
losers" and erecting memorials to "all" the fallen. I just
love a bit of revisionism... |
