Haga • Skansen • Drottningholm • Stockholm

Supposedly Venice of the North, but not even vaguely in the same league...no stinky canals and thieving gondoliers for a start.

Stockholm is one of the most civilised capitals I have visited, and the sort of place one could imagine living.  Great hotels and restaurants if you can afford it.  A day on the archipelago, ideally with lunch on one of the steam ferries is unforgettable and life just floats past...in summer that is!

In winter it is a wee bit chilly, though as they say:  "There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong kind of clothing".

Lots of museums, including the famous one where the Wasa is kept.  A 17th century warship which sank on its maiden voyage and was brought to the surface and restored at the end of the 20th century.  Makes you wonder how they survived on board when it was so intensely cold and wet.  Possibly something to do with the 1 litre per day vodka ration!

In summer it is beautiful and there is an excellent open air museum where they have brought together regional buildings on one site, not to mention palaces and castles and a rather groovy copper tent, painted to look like a real one.
