Supposedly the best
preserved workhouse in the country, Southwell is an austere place.
Maybe it is just that I prefer clean, uncluttered buildings, but this
place does not seem like such a terrible place to spend a life of
penury, assuming that is, you were to endure penury one way or another.
Certainly, according to the information provided on site, the lifestyle
would have been tough, but reasonable accommodation and food.
Probably a great deal more wholesome and purposeful than squandering
a meaningless existence in a council flat in Bulwell, watching drivel on
TV.... |
