Christchurch | Akaroa | Arrowtown | Invercargill
I had been warned about Invercargill.  Many years earlier I had seen a road movie, ending in this Southern tip of the South Island.  On hearing this, one of my fellow travellers remarked that it was a god-forsaken hole to be avoided at all costs.  As we were waiting for a flight from Christchurch to Queenstown at the time, I felt the admonition somewhat unnecessary.

However, as we swung down over the mountains through the cloud on final approach to Queenstown for the third time, the captain announced that, as it was too dangerous to land there, we would divert to...Invercargill; from there a three hour bus trip back up the island.

The bus was a left over from the 1950's, an anomaly I assumed...wrongly.  The whole place is in a time warp, even by New Zealand standards.  It is also clearly a farming town.  To my amusement and amazement, we were driven down the main street which sported one Pizza Hut, one supermarket and sixteen tractor dealerships!
