The Lofoten Islands in
the North of Norway are justifiably renowned as providing some of the most
spectacularly beautiful scenery anywhere on earth. The combination of
dramatic mountains plunging into the ocean and the quaintest fishing
villages perched on stilts over the crystal clear azure water, plus fairy
tale farms dotted around the intense greenery of the fields...
If you can cope with the silly prices for food and
basic accommodation and the mind-numbing booze prices, then the views are
well worth the rather long journey; it actually took longer to fly from the
UK to Harstad than it does to get to Tokyo!
In summer the days go on for ever and the sun does
shine all night, disconcerting but rather handy when you are trying to take
photos with no fear of tourists wandering into the shot.
I have used the heading of Lofoten here, mainly
because that is the name that most people think of in a generic sense for
the amazing islands off the North West coast of Norway, even though there
are confusingly many islands within the area. Sometimes referred to as
Lofoten and Vesterålen. Most of the images are from the Nordland
region, not surprisingly as Lofoten is mainly in Nordland. |
