The guide books (well,
the infamously unreliable Lonely Planet) claimed that Datong
still boasted the last steam engine factory in the world, but by the time
I got there in 1990, it was gone. However, it also has the amazing Yun Gang caves full of Buddha statues, not to mention temples, a nine
dragon wall and proximity to some of the most fantastic sights in the
world.
The cuisine left rather a lot to be desired
(maggots in the rice!) and made me painfully aware of what life must be like
for the locals if this was how bad the tourist food was outside the major
cities. A visit to the local food market and I decided that discretion
was definitely the better part of valour and I ended up surviving on my
emergency Toblerone ration for the next couple of days.
