Chengde, the summer capital, built to accommodate
rulers of the provinces of China when they came to visit the
emperor. Each built their own palace in their own local style, so
there is a mini replica of the Potahla Palace in Tibet; a perfect place
for architecture fanatics to study vernacular architecture without
spending six months touring China. Unfortunately I went in winter so,
although terribly atmospheric, the hotel heating could not keep up, nor
could that in the train-glad I brought my thermals!
