For those of you who
prefer your pictures nice and crispy, move on to the Brussels images (2),
where you will find the results of 15 years of my efforts to photograph the
Grand Place in all its glory. Why has it taken 15 years? Because
until the spring of 2007, there has never been a moment when some or all of
it has not been covered in scaffolding. Now at last it is revealed in
all its glory and well worth the wait.
However, I have never felt that Brussels was best enjoyed at face value,
hence this attempt to capture the dreamlike character I think it deserves.
If Leonard Cohen plays the music to slit your wrists to, then Brussels is
probably the place to slit them. On the positive side, it is, like Cohen,
full of character, romantic, satisfyingly melancholic and inspirational.
There is a lot more to Brussels than chocolate, moules and excellent beer!
