Atlanterhavsveien, the Atlantic Coast Road, is more than a simple road.  It was built to join the isolated coastal communities to each other and the rest of Norway, as ever in Norway, at unbelievable expense.  The road builders decided that, as they were squandering the entire national oil income for the next ten years on the project, they might as well have some fun whilst they were at it.  Hence one of the world's most pointlessly complicated bridges, curving in all three dimensions (almost surprised they did not have a crack at the fourth dimension) which, although an elegant and impressive bit of engineering is essentially just a short fixed span bridge.

Plus points:

  •   You do not have to pay to use it!!!! (this has probably changed by now)
  •   It is quicker and easier than endless ferries
  •   The views are fantastic
